Ordered the chicken korma special for lunch. The korma was neon yellow and tasted like it was sweetened with regular sugar. Worst korma I’ve had. Beef vindaloo was also insanely spicy.

The ambiance, interiors and setup is pretty amazing. The round window seats overlooking the streets provide a wonderful vibe. The staff is friendly however they were pretty below in serving and we had to wait for a long time to get our orders despite us being the only people who were dining in. We saw multiple delivery orders picked up during our dine in. As we weren't local to Kingston so we had no other option than to wait.

Coming to the food, we had ordered Lassi in drinks that was mango flavored, we didn't expect that was coming. The Mulligatawny soup we ordered was pretty thin in consistency. The tea was okay. For the main course we had ordered chicken tikka masala which we didn't like in terms of taste and cooking. The chicken pieces didn't at all taste like tikka, it was like the same cubes used in butter chicken. The prawn phatia was too sweet in taste. The mixed veg was Average. Overall an average experience with a huge room for improvement in terms of food taste.

WORST BIRYANI EVER (Please read the entire review, Being an Indian, I have had biryani all across my country and I can bet what they served was not biryani)

I visited Darbar based on google reviews where they suggested it to serve the best chicken biryani in the town.

They just served turmeric rice with some cooked chicken which is surely not what biryani is.
I even had to pay for the raita separately (raita is included with the biryani, not some slice of tomato and cucumber, see images), stop looting in the name of authentic food.

If you are having it for the first time, please do not ever have biryani from this place else you will spoil your taste to ever go for real biryanjs again.

And Darbar restaurant you really need to improve the quality, things dont work out this way for long. You can fool others but surely not people for whom these foods their cuisine!

TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED!

If you don’t believe this, read all the reviews by Indians for the Indian cuisine they serve!

If you’re craving authentic Bangladeshi and South Asian cuisine, this restaurant is an absolute must-try! The magic begins with the culinary mastery of brothers Ananta and Chef Ashok, who truly bring their passion and expertise to every dish. Their "Morog Polao" is simply divine. Not only is the food exceptional, but the service is also top-notch, making your dining experience as memorable as the flavors. Enjoy!

Worst food i have ate in canada in the name of Indian cuisine. The funny thing is that Owner told me he is operating this restaurant for 32 years, It is such a shame that still serve such a pathetic food, feels sorry for residents and students of kingston. Google does not allow 0 ratings otherwise I would have given that, and I want my money back, that is pure cheating against indian food.

Please avoid this restaurant.

Biryani was not even rice pulav see the picture your self.

Matar paneer just had boiled peas and some panner no gravy at all, see picture as proof.

Look at the Naan, they are the one you get ready-made from Walmart and chargedme 4 cad for that, we ordered both regular and garlic but they both are same.

It’s unbelievable that this place is operating since years. They server food which is noway close to authentic indian food.. We ordered matar panner , dal tadka , biryani and naan..

The panner was very chewy and you can hardly find panner pieces, the dal tadka was average and biryani was actually veg pulav .. frozen veggies added to rice..

The worse was Naan. I haven’t seen any indian resturante serving pita bread in the name of naan .. Funny thing the garlic naan was basically garlic seasoning over pita bread ..

Save your time and money and please avoid this place.

I’d like to preface this by saying that we have ordered from Darbar for many years, and have always loved the food and service. However, two weeks ago we got takeout with my parents and my 89 yr Dad ended up going to the hospital in an ambulance, due to a piece of (what we think) was cinnamon stick getting caught in his throat. We ordered the Darbar rice, which does not mention cinnamon. However after reading the menu again, the Paleo rice does mention “flavoured with fresh cinnamon” Perhaps we received the wrong rice dish? In any case, there were obvious pieces of cinnamon sticks in the rice, which I tried to remove before serving. However as seen in this picture, there were small pieces of either cinnamon stick or some other raw spice throughout the rice. We had to call 911 and after an X-ray and endoscopy, it was discovered that a partial piece of cinnamon stick(?) was lodged in his esophagus. He is fine now but is on antibiotics for three weeks to heal the esophagus from the damage that was caused. All to say, please check the rice dishes before eating!!! Or any other dish for that matter!! And yes, I will be in contact with the restaurant…just do not want this to happen to anyone else.
