The Allanburg Bridge is an impressive lift bridge over the Welland Canal, offering great views of passing ships. It’s a unique spot to stop and watch the engineering in action. Traffic can back up when the bridge lifts, but that’s part of the charm. A neat piece of local history and canal life.

Cool place to watch ships go under the bridge. But, if you're cycling, be careful. Hwy 20 is almost impossible to cross! There should be a pedestrian light near the bridge. Way too dangerous, cars go by too fast, speed limit is 50km/h, but most cars go by between 60 & 80km/h

Lift bridges are beautiful. A classic method for solving the problem of sharing a space between a waterway and a roadway when there is a need for heavy transport. A hundred years ago, they didn't have the technology or materials for bascule drawbridges to support heavy vehicles so the "lift bridge" was designed.

A vertical lift bridge is movable bridge where the span rises vertically while remaining parallel with the deck. These are generally less expensive than "leaf" bridges as the counterweights can be lighter and less challenging to move repeatedly.

The Allanburg Bridge (also known as Bridge 11) is a "through-truss" and carries Highway 20 over the Welland Canal between Fonthill and Niagara Falls. It was constructed in 1930 and updated in 2001. Of course, there is no toll for road vehicles to pass over the bridge.

I hung out for a bit but there was no traffic at this time, so I didn't get to see the bridge raise. Bummer!

Came here with family and 🐕 under April's full 🌝 Offered semaa, we all sang and 🥁 🥁 for water spirits. Bea and Courage played BB's mini drum shaker. A beautiful calm night. 💖We all fed 🌊 🍓 🍓 🍓 🍓 The parking space was great and free.
